How Influencers Are Reshaping the Entertainment Industry

An article from The New York Times talks about the blend between celebrity and influencer culture.

Social media has significantly changed how fame is created and maintained in modern culture. Unlike traditional celebrities who rose to prominence through film, television, or music industries, influencers gain recognition through platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. As this shift continues, influencers are increasingly moving beyond online spaces and entering areas of traditional entertainment. This trend suggests that in the future, influencer status and online following will play a major role in determining cultural relevance, brand partnerships, and even casting decisions in film and television.

One major area where this shift is becoming visible is the entertainment industry itself. Influencers are now being cast in movies, television shows, and streaming productions, sometimes alongside or instead of traditionally trained actors. For example, Addison Rae transitioned from social media fame on TikTok into acting, including her role in Monster: The Ed Gein Story, showing how online popularity can lead directly to mainstream entertainment opportunities. This does not mean acting skill is becoming irrelevant, but it does indicate a growing emphasis on marketability and built-in audiences. If this trend continues, casting decisions may increasingly factor in social media influence as part of the selection process.

In addition to casting, influencers are also becoming more visible in spaces traditionally reserved for established celebrities. High-profile cultural events such as the Met Gala now regularly feature social media creators alongside actors, musicians, and fashion icons. For instance, influencer Emma Chamberlain’s numerous appearances at the Met Gala reflect how digital creators are being integrated into elite entertainment and fashion spaces. Her presence at such an event highlights the growing cultural legitimacy of influencers, suggesting that online fame is becoming just as influential as traditional celebrity status.

This change is also affecting how fame itself is measured. In the past, celebrities were primarily discovered and promoted through studios, record labels, and media networks. Today, however, visibility is often determined by engagement metrics such as likes, views, shares, and followers (Forbes). Platforms like TikTok have demonstrated how quickly individuals can gain massive audiences without traditional gatekeeping (Spectrum News). As this system becomes more central to the entertainment industry, an individual’s digital reach may function almost like a resume, with follower counts and engagement rates serving as indicators of influence and opportunity.

Ultimately, the rise of influencers suggests a future where social media presence is just as important as traditional talent or industry connections. If current trends continue, the entertainment industry may evolve into a system where digital influence is one of the primary factors shaping who becomes a star. In this future, fame will not only be earned through performance in traditional media, but also through the ability to capture and maintain attention online.
